What is Data Protection?

Data protection is the process of protecting data from corruption, compromise or loss.  But not all data should be treated equally. Depending on your Recovery Time Objective (RTO) and Recovery Point Objective (RPO) determines what type of protection is required. There several types protection models, Continuous Availability, Replication, Snapshots, Backup, Archive and Isolated Recovery. Below are the use cases for the different types of protection.

  • Critical – Critical data requires protection solutions offering Continuous Availability, Replication and Snapshots.
  • General short term – Protection for short term retention (1 to 3 months) fall under Backup solutions. Backup solutions protect all general data to provide recovery within a 24 hour RPO.  Backup solutions can be used for Long Term Retention when copied to a lower cost form of storage such as tape or object storage.
  • Legal and Compliance – To meet legal and compliance regulation, most Archiving solution provide features such as Legal Hold and Governance Retention capabilities.
  • Isolated Recovery – Policy-driven automated workflows to move business critical data into an isolated environment and lock it down.
